Over three packed days more than 850 students (48 boys’ teams and 24 girls’ teams) travelled from 12 different International Schools to compete in Sotogrande International School’s (SIS) Inter-school football tournament at the school’s football pitches in the beautiful setting of Santa Maria Polo fields.
This event was one of the biggest international school events of its kind in Europe and the first time many students played competitive football against other schools. Girls and boys from 7 to 18 years old competed in 230 matches over three days on 8 pristine grass football pitches, cheered on by many friends and family.
In a very friendly, positive setting kids not only got to compete against other schools, but also to learn how to referee, cope with nerves and the highs and lows of winning and losing, not to mention learning about respect for officials and opponents and sportsmanship. Honours were shared with champions at various age groups including teams from SIS, EIC, Laude, Aloha and Almuñecar.
Kevin Stone, Leader of Learning Physical and Health Education at SIS commented – “We are delighted to create a magical, memorable educational sporting experience for so many international school students. For many participants, this was their first ever experience of a large inter schools sports event and hopefully it will remain in their memories for a very long time. If they catch the ‘sporting bug’ early on due to these fun events, I feel that it is a job very well done by the Costa del Sol teachers and Sotogrande International School.”
